Common Questions

Throughout the years, patients have been asking us a number of questions. Here are just a few of the more commonly asked ones, but if there's a question here we haven't answered, please feel free to call us to find out more. Perhaps we'll even add it to our list here!

Dr. Lauck has received a Fellowship in orthodontics from the International Orthodontic Association and a Fellowship in general dentistry from the Academy of General Dentistry. Can you show me what my smile can look like ahead of time?

We routinely use models and digital imaging to help our patients visualize the end results of cosmetic and restorative work. By simply asking the right questions, taking various photos and measurements of your current smile, we can create a model of your new smile that will demonstrate how your procedure will look. You can go home with your temporary smile to receive feedback from friends and family.

How do I know when it is time to come in for a checkup?

We have a full-time hygiene coordinator who will send you a card to remind you of your next checkup, typically every six months. While twice daily brushing and flossing go a long way towards maintaining a healthy mouth, it is wise to check for plaque that has hardened into tartar, which requires professional cleaning in order to avoid gingivitis.

At what age should my children first see Dr. Lauck and Dr. Corley?

We generally recommend children come into the dental office by the age of four. Of course the mother and father are the best judges of when their children can visit the dental office, as many children come in even earlier. On the first visit, we recommend the child sits on mommy's or daddy's lap during the parent's dental cleaning, so the child can begin to have a positive, non-threatening experience of the dental office. This will lead to a lifetime of good dental health and a positive relationship with Drs. Lauck and Corley.

In order to maintain a well-run office, we request all appointment cancellations be made at least 24 hours ahead of time. This ensures you will avoid being billed for our time and preparation; it also enables us to work in other patients' emergency visits.

My child has had an accident and his/her tooth has been entirely knocked out. What do I do?

If there is no imminent medical emergency such as uncontrolled bleeding, unconsciousness, or other bodily injury, please contact us immediately to see Dr. Lauck or Dr. Corley as soon as possible. Simply describe the situation over the phone and our office staff will help you determine the safest and most appropriate plan of action. I do not like drills. Are there any other options?

We offer laser dentistry and air abrasion. Dental lasers provide drill-free treatment options that are faster and more comfortable than traditional methods. Air abrasion removes decay and prepares teeth for fillings without the drill. Dr. Lauck or Dr. Corley simply cleans out and prepares the site to be filled by sending a blast of tiny, high-speed aluminum oxide particles into the cavity itself. The particles hit the tooth under high pressure, bounce off at high speeds, and consequently blast away any decay. Air abrasion is quiet, quick and relatively painless and avoids sacrificing tooth structure.

My gums bleed after I brush. Is this something to be concerned about?

It is certainly not desirable to have bleeding gums following brushing. However, the condition may or may not require attention, depending on the source of the problem. Bleeding gums can be caused by improper, rough, 'scrubbing' instead of gentle, circular brushing motions; using a hard-bristled tooth brush instead of a soft one; plaque and/or tartar build-up below the gum line; or gum sensitivity due to gingivitis or periodontal disease. If this problem persists despite correct brushing and flossing methods or occurs every time you brush, contact our office to set up an evaluation appointment.

I really do not like visiting the dentist, is there anything you can do to help me relax?

We understand many people have qualms about having their teeth worked on. So, we strive to create a relaxing atmosphere. For entertainment and distraction, we have special headphones and DVD movies available in all rooms so you can keep your mind on more pleasant things. And for the more complex procedures, we also offer laughing gas and local anesthesia to keep you comfortable and relaxed.

I want my front teeth to look better, but I do not want to wear braces. What would you recommend?

Dr. Lauck and Dr. Corley have a number of ways to improve the look of your front teeth without the use of traditional braces. For slightly crooked or unevenly worn teeth, a bit of reshaping and the addition of porcelain veneers may be sufficient to give them a bright, uniform look. In other cases, it may be necessary to attach 'invisible' braces behind the front teeth. We also offer Invisalign braces, which straighten teeth through a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners no one can tell you're wearing. We would be happy to talk with you further about the option that best suits your individual situation.
